The capital of UK’s crash for cash as the number one hotspot has been revealed. A not for profit organisation funded by insurers place it as a very high risk region. The level of fraud that is reported in several postcodes escalate it to take half of the positions in the top 10 places of where crash for cash is prevalent.
The Insurance Fraud Bureau published the information and can confirm that Birmingham is the UK’s worst hit area for crash for cash type accidents. This type of fraud is where an accident is staged to intentionally crash a vehicle and/or cause extensive damage with destructive tools. Some crashes, where a group of swindlers work together, are deliberately swayed by sham drivers who make their victims smash into a designated marked car.
The second highest hotspot is Bradford which is followed by Manchester and Oldham. Trailing behind are Bolton, Blackburn, Liverpool, Enfield, Sheffield, Wakefield and London. The publication alerts the insurance companies and the police to the top 30 postcodes that are at high risk so that they can be more than just vigilant to such false accident claims.

The Insurance Fraud Bureau declares that the insurance industry is hit with £336m each year through these fake claims which include personal injury and car hire. Their director Ben Fletcher says that the people who cheat the system with crash for cash are being a menace to our roads and to innocent people. There have been fatalities in some cases.
Even though there is a list of hotspots for these types of accidents, it is important to understand that it can occur anywhere and the director is keen for road users to be aware of the scams. Hopefully, they can exercise caution as necessary and in the unfortunate event of a potential crash for cash collision, it is advised to report it.
The government is looking to introduce the Civil Liability Bill to tackle the number of fraudulent claims and to change the threshold in producing medical evidence. It will bring a fixed tariff to work out damages for whiplash injuries and is part of the reform to increase the small claims limit to £5k. Whether this will reduce sham cases remain to be seen.
